Centre Championships

Centre Championships went extremely well over 3 weeks, with lots of PBs and records achieved. Medals, participation certificates and the Handicap race were all a part of Presentation Day held on Saturday, March 18th.
Major award winners for the season were U8 Maggie O'May and U14 Jordan Lovell who were the joint winners of the Huon Valley Ex-Servicemens and Womens Club Achievement award. This award is for a high level of achievement at both Centre and State levels.
U13 Gabby Lovell won the Dick Clark Award for Sportsmanship - in fact the entire U13 team should be mentioned as having a very sportsman-like attitude the entire season - well done to you all !
U8 Nathan Coad was given the John Hill Memorial trophy for his cheerful appearance every week, improving his performances and always trying his hardest. This trophy is also known as the Starters award for encouragement.
Last but not least was the winner of the Handicap race, U10 James Burdick. He was awarded the Heevey Memorial Trophy, which he is able to keep until this time next year ! Well done James !
Our Registrar, Sally Smith, also said her goodbyes after 7 years of service to the Centre as Registrar and many more as a parent helper. Thank you Sally, happy retirement !

Positions Vacant : Please note that at our AGM, to be held on May 2nd., all Committee positions are open - we really need fresh faces to fill the gaps left by departing members. We especially need a new Announcer, Publicity Officer and Website manager ( yours truly is retiring after 9 years of duty at Little Aths ). Parents with younger children looking at another 3 + years involvement in Little Athletics would be ideal candidates. Anyone interested ( in any position from President down ) should contact the Secretary or email me at this site. Don't forget, everyone is welcome to attend our monthly meetings, in fact we would welcome new faces with open arms !!!

For Southern All State ( Jan 15th. ), Relay Day and State Individual Championship results, see bottom of page.

Each week Little Athletics sponsor, McDonalds, gives encouragement awards to those Little Athletes who have shown improvement on the day and our winners are:

Our Come and Try Night , held on the 5th October 2005, seemed to be a success given the weather, with a good turnout of kids. Although only a brief taste of what we have on offer, those who attended had fun.

Brian Pook, former Little Athlete and record holder, opened our season for us on Saturday October 15th.The weather held out nicely and a successful day was had, with several records being broken already ! Teletha Phillips broke the1500m Walk record for U13 and U14 had seven new records established with Hannah Short breaking records in 100m, 400m and High Jump, Jess Halloran Discus, Jordan Lovell 400m and newcomer Jarrah Bridges in the 100m and High Jump. This sure is setting bar high for the rest of the season ! Well done !

I try to take photos of athletes every week, but in order to put them on the web site ( or in the Huon News ), I do need a permission slip signed by a parent or guardian to enable me to do that. Permission forms will be available from your Team Manager or from me, Sandra Pullen, in the Announcers box.

Uniform Matters ! At the State conference concerns were raised about the wearing ( or not wearing ) of correct uniform. Our uniform consists of the Centre top - red and blue, to be worn with black sports shorts. The correct Club badge must be displayed on the top - see your Team Manager for a badge. Correct footwear must also be worn.

This season we see the demise of the U7A and U7B age groups - these will now become U6 and U7. How sensible !

All registered Little Athletes had the chance to win tickets to the Commonwealth Games which are to be held in Melbourne next March. You can view the winning names on the ALA website - go to the Links page and follow prompts.

A big thank you to Forestry Tasmania for a very generous donation to the Centre. We put the money towards defraying the cost of tops for this season.

Don't forget our next meeting - NB. we now meet on every second Thursday of the month and the next meeting is on Thursday, July 13th, at the Secretary's house. Please come along and support your Centre, the more interested parents who come to these meetings the better ! New ideas and input are always welcome.

See you there !

National Competition 2006
Congratulations to Teletha Phillips who represented Tasmania ( and the Huon Valley) admirably at the National titles held in April in Canberra. She brought home a Bronze medal for the U13 Girls 1500m Walk. It was an outstanding effort from Teletha and she was the only athlete from the injury ridden Tasmanian team to come home with a medal. It is no small feat to represent your state, and even more impressive to compete so well at national level. Well done Teletha !

Congratulations to Jordan Lovell for five new state records - he now has the records in the 100m, 200m & 400m, Triple Jump and Shotput.
Congratulations also to Jess Halloran who has two new records in Shotput and Discus.
